How is cost per round calculated?

Cost per round is the sum of four components: brass (total bag price ÷ number of cases), primer (box price ÷ number of primers), powder (price × charge weight ÷ total grains in the container, where 1 lb = 7000 grains), and bullet (box price ÷ number of bullets). The calculator shows both Initial (first firing, includes full brass cost) and Subsequent (every firing after, brass already paid for).

Why are there two numbers — Initial and Subsequent?

Brass is reusable. The first time you fire a piece, you've "paid" for it fully. On every firing after that, brass effectively costs $0 because it's already in your inventory. Subsequent cost is what most handloaders actually experience over the life of a case, which typically fires 5–10+ times.

What about taxes, shipping, and hazmat fees?

Include them in the total cost fields. If a pound of powder cost $50 + $30 hazmat shipping, enter $80. The calculator divides the total cost by the total charges, so any fixed cost gets amortized correctly across every round.

How many grains are in a pound of powder?

Accepted Answer

7,000 grains exactly. One pound = 453.592 grams = 7,000 grains. The calculator handles the conversion automatically when you select "lb" as the unit.
